Signs You May Need to Replace Your Heater

Are you unsure if you need to get your heater repaired or replaced? Here are some signs that your heater needs to be repaired or replaced:

  • Increasing Energy Costs: If your heating bills keep increasing, consider upgrading your heater to a modern, high-efficiency furnace.
  • Odd Noises: Does your heater make weird noises? A technician should investigate rattling, banging, constant clicking, or other strange sounds.
  • Inadequate Heating: Does your heating system give out enough heat? Is your heat uneven between rooms, or is the air only lukewarm?
  • Burning Odor: Turn off your furnace if you smell a lingering or pungent burning smell. Depending on the severity, it will need repairs and possibly replacement. When things get so hot that plastics or electronics start to burn, there is a problem.
  • The Furnace Is Old: Is your furnace between 15 and 20 years old? Once they reach that age range, they start to break down and require replacement.
  • Frequent Repairs: Does your furnace require chronic repairs? You likely will save money replacing it entirely rather than fixing it up a little bit at a time.
  • Expensive Repairs: Are the repairs approaching the 50 percent cost to simply replace it?

If any of these apply to your heater, it’s time for at least a maintenance trip to have it checked out. Charles Stone offers complete furnace repair, maintenance, and replacement on all brands and models in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Types of Heating Solutions

While there are various ways to keep warm over the winter, Tennessee’s three most common systems are furnaces, heat pumps, and ductless mini-split systems.

Furnaces

About 52 percent of Tennessee homeowners use a furnace as their primary heating source, according to a 2020 census. Furnaces can be fueled by natural gas or electricity. Natural gas furnaces are extremely popular because they are affordable to buy and operate.

Natural gas is readily available within city limits and is very affordable. It burns extremely efficiently–some gas furnaces can offer an impressive 98 percent heat efficiency. Electric furnaces are available for those who don’t have easy access to natural gas lines.

Heat Pump Heating & Cooling Unit

About 35 percent of Tennessee homeowners use a central heat pump as their home’s heating system. Heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular. They use pressurized refrigerant to capture heat in the air outside your home, compress it, and bring that heat into your home. Heat pumps are incredibly efficient and have a low operating cost, even lower than natural gas furnaces.

The initial cost of a heat pump is more than a furnace, but that extra cost is made up in two ways. First, the savings on heating efficiency, as they require very little electricity to operate.

The second way is that they can reverse the process and replace your AC. They can gather heat in your home’s air, use refrigerant to carry it, and put it outside. It’s a two-in-one system. The AC side of the heat pump is as efficient as a modern AC unit, with SEER ratings of anywhere from 14 to 24 plus.

Ductless Mini-Split Heating & Cooling System

The main benefit of a ductless mini-split heating system is that it doesn’t require a ductwork system to be installed in your home. A mini-split system that can both heat and cool works on the same principle as a heat pump but without using the central air system to distribute the conditioned air.

The ductless mini-split system has both internal and external units. Internal units blow air in particular rooms. A small refrigerant line runs from each indoor unit to the outdoor unit. This line is much less invasive than installing a duct system, which has to be much larger. A small drain line must also be installed to collect and drop humidity down the drain or outside.

Like heat pumps, ductless mini-split systems are extremely efficient and cost little to operate. Their initial installation costs more, but remember you are getting a two-in-one system.
